Shelter and safety were daily challenges. If these were not hard enough, as a young species, their cognitive abilities were not fully developed to cope with such harsh challenges. Furthermore, they were susceptible to diseases, making their existence even more precarious. The odds could not have been worse. Yet, they survived. Along this arduous journey across thousands of years, they adapted and evolved. They learnt to use clothing, fire and stone tools. Their hunting strategies and social collaboration skills improved. Their overall cognitive capabilities improved and humans were ready for the upcoming pivotal phases of our history, that would start with the Pleistocene Glaciation, marking the end of the last ice age, 12,000 years ago. Human history is a testament to our species’ remarkable ability to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity. These 3 phases provided opportunities equally loaded with adversities and vice versa. How the ancient humans responded holds facinating [lessons](https://www.bhaskart.com/lessons-from-an-auto-rickshaw-ride/) worth remembering, ### 1) **The Icebreaker:** The end of the last Ice Age led to rising sea levels and formation of rivers. The landscape changed and humans started settling near rivers and learned to live off them. This new environment and adaptation posed new challenges that the humans had never experienced before. In response, our ancestors not just developed innovative solutions to overcome these new difficulties, but actually **Use the difficulty** to their advantage. When the rivers flooded from time to time they developed canals, levees, dikes to not just control the floods but to actually use them for agriculture. They also developed early warning systems to track water levels or a calendar system to predict the flood cycle. Such sophisticated systems of agriculture and irrigation systems revolutionized food production. This laid the foundation for the emergence of civilizations like the Indus Valley (IVC), Ancient Egypt and Sumer. ### 2) **Leaving No Stone Unturned:** The Neolithic period (Circa 10,000 to 4,000 (y.a) laid the foundation on which the remarkable history of our race would be built. The early human invention of polished stone during the stone age, was a game changer for a while but the limitations of stone posed considerable challenges. Once again our future depended on how we responded. Yet again, they found solutions by actually using these difficulties. The limitations of stone were used to observe the properties of clay and develop lightweight potteries. The versatile pottery eliminated the need for stone based containers to prepare, store food and store water. They also reduced the reliance on stone hearth & ovens for cooking. If pottery transformed domestic life, the invention of the wheel (6,000 to 5,500 y.a) revolutionized transportation, enabled trade and enabled animal drawn plows for agriculture. Wheel was invented by observing the movement of round objects like rolling stones. This period also saw symbolic expressions and rock carvings, which were the building blocks for written communication that would be developed in a few 1000’s of years. These innovations accelerated human progress. ### 3) **Putting ‘Metal to the Pedal’:** If the stone age created momentum to the human journey, then the discovery of metalworking, around 6,500 years ago propelled it forward at a rapid pace. The discovery of metalworking, such as copper, bronze and later iron led to advancements in agriculture, trade, and warfare. But metal working posed significant challenges. Metal ores were scarce, and extracting, processing, and shaping them required considerable skill and effort. Invention of new techniques like smelting & refining was used to overcome the challenges of extracting metal from ore. The early metals were brittle and this was overcome by creation of alloys like bronze (copper+tin). The limitations of early tools and techniques drove the development of new tools, such as hammers, anvils, and tongs, which enabled more efficient and precise metalworking. Yet again, the early humans proved that the only way forward is to **Use the difficulty** All three civilizations (IVC, Ancient Egypt, Sumer) developed unique urban designs, house architecture and various solutions to address the local challenges caused on account of unique climatic conditions, nature of soil, available materials etc. ### **How The Mighty Have Fallen:** #### Failing to Use the difficulty: The world is an unforgiving place. The mighty empires of old, which once shone like beacons of adaptability, ingenuity and played a massive role in shaping the modern world, eventually succumbed to the ravages of time, leaving behind only remnants of their former glory. The Indus Valley Civilization, with its sophisticated urban planning and advanced water management systems were impressive, but their inability to adapt to changing environmental conditions led to their downfall The once-mighty Sumerians failed to manage their irrigation systems effectively, leading to soil salinization and decreased agricultural productivity. They gradually declined as their cities were ravaged by wars and environmental degradation. Ancient Egypt, with its towering pyramids and majestic temples, slowly crumbled under the weight of internal strife, external invasions, and the relentless march of the desert sands. Their over-reliance on Nile was also a major factor as they failed to keep up with the changes in flooding patterns of this mighty river. ### **The Wheel Of Time:** The Indus Valley, Sumerians, and Ancient Egypt attained glory with their ingenuity, keeping pace with the changes and more importantly, turning adversities to opportunities. But all of them eventually failed when they forgot the basics that made them successful. After thriving for thousands of years, they failed to adapt to **environmental changes or internal conflicts or external threats** leading to their decline. There are many lessons that can be learned from the rise and fall of the 3 greatest civilizations of ancient times. Many great civilizations followed over the next thousands of years. Mycenean (3,600 to 3,100 y.a), Mayan (3,000 to 2,500 y.a), Mauryan Empire (2,346 to 2,209 y.a) Roman Empire (2,000 to 1,500 y.a), Gupta Empire (1,704 to 1,474 y.a), Inca (586 to 491 y.a), The Mughal Empire (498 to 167 y.a), Ottoman Empire (725 to 102 y.a). However, a quick glance at their history will leave you disappointed because of how they met with the same fate as the 3 ancient civilizations . And all of them failed for similar reasons. Yet the reasons we grapple with today are the same that caused the downfall of these great empires. AI is taking weeks. We do not have the luxury of time this time. And of course, we now have nuclear weapons and social media. What can possibly go wrong? Usually it means more noise. When you paint, you do not load every colour onto the brush before a stroke. You choose. Deliberately. The discipline is not in having more colours. It is in knowing which one the painting needs right now. It is in knowing which one the painting needs right now.The outputs will always be proportional to the quality of your thinking before you type. One of the most important skills we can practice is discipline. The kind that asks: do I actually need to say this? Does the model need to know this? Is this conversation still serving the task, or is it now serving my uncertainty? This is not a new skill AI demands. It is the same discipline that was always worth practicing. The internet was the first wave that connected people to information. Mobile was the second that put the world at our fingertips. IoT was promising to be the third, connecting everything to everything else. Humans rode those waves well. But what has arrived now is not a wave. It is the ocean itself. Artificial Intelligence is the water in which all future waves will form. Every industry, every function, every role is being reshaped by it, and the speed of that reshaping has caught even the optimists off guard. In that 2015 post, I wrote something that still holds true today. > [Consumers will not fear the technology that they don’t understand. In every case, the technology extended your capability. But it stayed in its lane. The machine did the mechanical part. The human did the thinking. The boundary between the two was never in question. AI is the first technology that operates in the same space as human thinking. It does not just give you a better tool and step aside. It produces work that looks like something a person made. A strategy document. A piece of writing. A design. An analysis. And it does it fast enough and well enough that you have to genuinely stop and ask yourself whether what it made is better than what you would have made. That is why we feel excited and nervous, at the same time. The excitement comes from the fact that your ceiling just got higher. In a single week in 2026, five powerful moves by governments, tech companies, and militaries all backfired, each one made with absolute conviction that it would succeed. ## When certainty is not certain anymore A few days ago the most powerful military in the world went to war with a country halfway across the globe. They now realise they are not dealing with an also-ran army. In the same week, the world witnessed another fight of unequals. The Pentagon and the US government picked a fight with an AI company practically down the street and blacklisted them. That move backfired too. They did not expect the world to C’LAUD’e the very company they went against. Large numbers of people downloaded Claude almost as an act of solidarity. Reddit threads appeared explaining how to migrate from ChatGPT. Someone even drew chalk art outside Anthropic’s office in San Francisco saying “you give us courage.” Then came Sam Altman. The genius. The man considered incapable of a wrong move. He announced a deal with the Pentagon on the same day Anthropic was officially blacklisted. Seemed like a smart move. Fill the vacuum, grab the contract, look decisive. That backfired too. So badly that he publicly admitted it looked “[opportunistic and sloppy](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/03/openai-sam-altman-pentagon-deal-amended-surveillance-limits.html).” Not a great sentence to have to say out loud when your whole brand is built on being the good guy. Meanwhile Claude spiked. From 42nd on the App Store to number one in a matter of days. Claude may not have been the choice of the US government, but it certainly became the choice of everyone else. Anthropic was beginning to bask in the glory. People felt happy propping the victim to the podium. And guess what. That backfired too. All those people who downloaded Claude in an act of righteous solidarity promptly crashed it. The servers slowed. The app hung. Social media filled with frustrated posts from users who had just made a principled stand for ethical AI and now could not get the thing to load. Meanwhile, two of the most powerful and strategically sophisticated militaries in the world, with all their precision weapons and war games, almost managed to choke Iran. Almost. But did they win? We will never know. What we do know is that this move backfired too. What weapons could not achieve, geography did. A narrow strait became the convenient choke point to starve the world of its fuel. Powerful nations came to their knees. In the space of one week, everyone who made a move they were completely sure about got it wrong. The video described a thought experiment about travelling to the Andromeda Galaxy, about 2.5 million light years away. If someone could travel close to the speed of light, the journey might feel short to them. But by the time they returned, millions of years would have passed on Earth. Everyone they knew would be gone. Perhaps even the human species. So, with no one left to hear the story or validate it, did the journey truly happen? This is exactly where we are with AI. We need validation. So even when the AI output is strong, we tweak it, rewrite it, or present it as our own intuition. It works, because it is now validated by human intelligence. Without that validation, it feels uncomfortable to accept it as truth. The tree fell. Loudly. Clearly. Undeniably. But without someone in the forest to acknowledge it, we hesitate to accept that it made a sound. It has brought the invincible humans to their knees. We could achieve anything that we could imagine, and we could destroy anything that we see. But nature played it smartly and unfairly by unfurling an invisible enemy. In just a matter of 2 months, we are shown our place in the pecking order. We are scared, locked down, and socially distanced. The inefficiencies of some of the most influential leaders are exposed. Nations are clueless. Ambitions have given way to mere survival. This beautifully choreographed dance and drama has been happening every day for billions of years, yet something about the Sun coming up or going down the horizon is awe-inspiring. Few sights on earth can compare to these magical moments. The Sun may be the show’s star on the east and western horizon daily, but the earth knows that it is the orchestrator of this show. But as the cloak of darkness engulfed the sky, the significance of the show I had just witnessed dawned on me. I was also amazed at the parallel this celestial drama shared with our lives. Was the Sun stealing the show or showcasing the earth’s hard work? The earth spins all day and all night. But only when its horizon goes past the Sun does its movement gets noticed. So, the Sun may not be stealing the thunder from the earth as I thought, but paying tribute to its selfless hard work, which otherwise goes unnoticed. We toil away daily, hoping for that elusive success. But, while hard work is essential, more is needed to guarantee success. ## We need a Purpose. We need our Sun. My initial apprehension was the patience required to bring out all those details. After all, you can learn techniques through YouTube videos but not patience. But then, fun is all about playing out of your comfort zone. Is it not? I had to resist the temptation of rushing through for nearly 40 hours. But thanks to the relentless push from a friend, I completed this work. Is it a good painting or a sad painting? Should I make the Lion carry a cub instead of the poor Lamb? But then, I was not sure if the Lions moved their cubs. I know lionesses do. Should the LambLamb be scared? Do lambs have an expressive face to show fear or happiness? In cartoons, maybe. Then came the clichéd doubt in my head. Am I the Lion or the Lamb? Who would I rather be? A lion is Powerful and Majestic for sure. That is cool, especially if you play a leadership role. But, the beast is undoubtedly Ferocious and Feared. Not too cool, but that is not going to hurt your position as a leader. A mighty Lion grabs what he wants and when he wants it. Modern management gurus will dig this Alpha predator characteristic and set you as the benchmark for Leadership. A lamb, on the other hand, is cute at best. It brings about a smile when you look at their clumsiness. But then they are lunch or dinner for just about every beast with claws or fangs or even a knife and fork. So I certainly would not like to be the vulnerable one. But then I am not a lion either, as much as I envy most of its power. ### **One** By now, the painting progressed significantly and reached a point that I had to take that decision of cub or a lamb in Lion’s mouth. Just then, I remembered a fundamental principle of painting realism. Paint what you see and not what you think should be. The original masterpiece had a lamb in Lion’s mouth, and so will my Lion too. For the remainder of the painting, I did not worry about the cause or logic. I did not care if the Lion was hungry or if the Lamb was scared. It did not matter to me if the Lion protected the Lamb or took it to the dinner table. I became an earnest trier, an artist who wanted to get better, a hobbyist who wanted to have fun, a humble student who was not worried about failing and many more at different stages of the painting process. All that mattered was the fun of putting paint-dipped brush to canvas and saw those images shaping up. I was many versions of the one person that mattered. After all, the Lion and Lamb is a metaphor for the ultimate sacrifice (Lamb) of God and his resurrection to life (Lion). Many versions that ultimately represent the ONE ### **The best way to be is to become the best version of ourselves** My Lion and Lamb painting might be a humble imitation of the original masterpiece. But, alas, this painting might not be exhibition worthy or good enough to be sold. And it does not matter. After all, what matters is that this painting will keep reminding me that we do not have to be a mighty lion or vulnerable Lamb. The painting reminds me that we do not have to bother about the game but be the best player while the game is on. It does not matter if we understand the play as long as we act the part we chose to perfection. It tells me that let us not worry about the war but battle hard as a true warriors as long as we are standing. So who is that hero? ### Who is the real hero Is it the lockdown? Or travel restrictions? Of course, these efforts helped for a while until we decided that they did not. So, is Vaccination the chosen One? We will know the truth in the long run. But, who has the patience to wait? Anyway, with so many nay Sayers around, we cannot call it the Chosen One yet. For now, we can call it an excellent sidekick to the hero, at best. ### Self-Discipline The real hero is our **self-discipline** – [Mask](https://bhaskart.com/the-mask-of-sorrow/), social distancing, hygiene and many other small but essential aspects that keep us safe. Habits that make us humans. Good practices that we long forgot and proudly branded **‘New Normal’** when we remembered them. We ignored self-discipline and let the pandemic determine how we lived. Unfortunately, it took a powerful villain to unearth a strength that we forgot. We allowed the adversity to define the our responsibility. We searched for the match stick after dark. But will we at least keep the flame on longer? Will we let discipline live with us, or are we already forgetting the hero again? ### Let there be light God said, Let there be light. He must have said that for a reason. Light is supposed to define and defy darkness. Whereas, we are letting darkness dictate what the light should do. The villain has become the need for a hero to appear. No wonder, the light is relegated fighting a lost battle of defying darkness. Let us not lose it again. Let us not ignore our hero. Let us not lose those disciplines. After all, it is the realm of visionary leadership trait. Details are often relegated to the poor foot soldiers to deal with. After all, Leadership is all about showing the Big Picture is it not? Besides, if we just focus on the small details, we will never get the big picture. That is a good excuse to avoid details and paint your version of the big story. Do you agree? ### Creating my own magical world Having done a few canvas paintings over the past 3 years, I wanted to transition to the larger versions. Or in other words, I wanted to paint a big picture. A very big one at that. The fun part of painting on canvas is that you create your magical world and live in it. Maybe not forever but at least as long as you are painting it. It’s a different matter that I have never figured out why these paintings always looked better in my head than on the canvas I have painted in. I even had a reference photo so that took care of the problem of my ‘creative- challenged’ mind. And, before I knew it, I was staring at the huge blank wall in front of me – A proverbial blank canvas that I could paint my world in. I felt like God. But then there was this small question that posed a big challenge. Where do I start? The harsh reality of the magnitude of the task ahead erased every hazy detail of the image I had in mind. (Ok, in the laptop screen). Did I say, I felt like God? An overwhelmed clueless God, I must admit. ### “[The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.](https://bhaskart.com/portfolio-items/standing-tall/)” – Confucius But don’t little things matter? Don’t these small details make big things happen? I decided to tackle the challenge by focusing on the details and started painting one little detail at a time. One tiny brushstroke at a time. I chose to ignore the big picture and looked at everything close-up. I was no longer trying to create a Master Piece but focused on the smallest of details. Not everyone is a gifted visionary. Ordinary mortals like my self, may not be able to paint a big story that inspires the world. But that does not mean, we cannot get there. A painting of an elephant taught me that. The hard way. From the canvas, the elephant watched me in silence, vast and unhurried. Was she trying to tell me something? Was that pain in her eyes? Clearly, she was carrying the weight of something I had not yet learned to name. When you paint a large elephant on canvas, you can get away with missing a few details. But not when you attempt a giant close-up of its face. Those melancholic eyes really do make you feel so much without a word. They hold power, strength, and wisdom. They carry the pleasures and pains of many years of memory. I wanted my elephant to speak to the viewer. I was so focused on capturing that melancholy in the eyes that I lost focus on the other equally important pressure points of the painting. I knew something was amiss. Maybe she was trying to tell me that. ## The Eyes Were Speaking “Those eyes are telling a story,” applauded a friend. “The dirt brown colour is a good choice,” added another. I was thrilled. People were seeing what I wanted them to see. “My God, this is shaping up well. I am waiting to see the finished painting,” said a third. Finished painting? I froze. “What do you mean, waiting for the finished painting? This is it,” I clarified. “After such powerful eyes, I thought you would paint the trunk as well.” And there it was. The elephant in the room. My elephant looked flat. Now I could not unsee it and I had to fix it. ## The trunk that refused to move No matter how many times I tried, the trunk refused to push forward in three dimensions. Stroke after stroke [fell flat](https://www.bhaskart.com/ugly-is-important/). The more I pushed, the more stubborn it seemed. I almost gave up. And then, finally, after several failed attempts, one curve came alive. The trunk leaned out of the canvas, no longer a flat line but a form with weight and depth. Relief washed over me. The elephant was finally looking back the way I had imagined. I could swear I saw a glint of a smile in her eyes. That moment stayed with me. I remember it every time I struggle with a section of a painting, especially when every instinct screams give up. ## The Paradox the Elephant Taught Me Here is what surprised me most. I had been adding more and more detail to the trunk, hoping it would pop forward. But the magic happened when I blurred the face instead, especially the sides around the trunk. Once I removed detail from the cheeks, the trunk stood out. It was a trade-off well worth it. It reminded me of the phrase we use, the elephant in the room. We say it is the problem everyone sees but no one confronts. But my elephant taught me something different. The problem was not that it was being ignored. The problem was that I was only seeing its surface, not its depth. Those eyes carried it all. Strength wrapped in gentleness, patience stretched over years of memory. They spoke without a word. But the trunk taught me another truth. The surface gives us the first impression, the shape we can hold on to. Depth gives us the meaning, the truth that lives beyond what we first see. For a long time I had been fighting the surface, thinking that more detail would turn into depth. The lesson was the opposite. Depth emerged only when I allowed the surface to step aside. ## Surface and depth Are Partners The world may first notice what is on the surface. But meaning, connection, and truth are always found in what lies beneath. Surface and depth are not rivals. They are partners. The surface invites us in. The depth keeps us there. Something about Painting **P**iqued my curiosity and I was constantly searching for that mystery **P** through the **P**lenty of childish, amateurish and lesser than few ‘not too shabby’ paintings**.** Is it **P**assion, **P**ractice or **P**atience that drove me to **P**ursue this hobby? A simple Google search will show that these are the apparent **P**icks. But are these the ones that made me go back to my Paints and Brushes weekend after weekend for the past four or five years? **P**assion is a strong emotional high but it **P**lateaued every time I did a lousy painting. In other words, every other attempt for me. **P**ractice is never a guarantee unless it is **P**erfect. And I also realized that **P**atience was not my virtue. #### Perseverance Could it be **P**erseverance then? – Keeping at it when all else fails, hoping that success will eventually knock on your doors. If not for anything, atleast for your efforts. Romantic and delusional as the hope may be, It does work for some. Ask any successful person, and they will vouch for it. So I **P**ersevered even if my canvas was not getting any **P**rettier. Did I Succeed with my Perseverance? I don’t know because I didn’t know my definition of success. I felt happy not because of the outcome but because I tried it. I tried this Painting because I wanted to use specific techniques that would help me paint this landscape as realistic as possible. Did I achieve that effect? Probably, not. But did I do better than I have ever done? Certainly, yes. Not only that, this Painting revealed that elusive **P** that was hiding in **P**lain Sight all along. #### Purpose **P**ursuit of **P**rogress has always been my drive for this hobby. Every weekend, I pick my brushes and canvas not to express my creative self. I know that I am not the creative type. But, I **P**ractice hard to reproduce the image in front of me on my canvas as close as I possibly can. They hold every thing together but yet, they are the thing in a frame that one almost misses. **Content:** ## *This post reflects on the Pale Blue Dot image and how the the most important thing in the frame is the one you almost miss.* A strange stillness emerges when you look at the Pale Blue Dot long enough. At first, you see almost nothing. A vast black canvas, streaks of light, cosmic silence. Then someone tells you where to look. A tiny speck, barely there. And suddenly your chest tightens a little, because that speck is home. That Pale Blue Dot is earth. As Carl Sagan would say, > “That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives… on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.” Carl Sagan saw the Pale Blue Dot as a humbling reminder of our smallness. He was right. But there is another truth hiding in that image, one that feels equally important. From the universe’s point of view, it is insignificant. From ours, it is everything. The universe may barely notice Earth, but life does not exist anywhere else we know. Remove that dot and the solar system would continue to spin, but without life, without memory, without meaning. The system may survive, but it becomes empty, losing its soul. Organisations often celebrate the big things. Bold ideas, high-impact visual drama, and breakthrough campaigns. Moments of inspiration that feel electric. These are the stars of our universe, loud, radiant, impossible to ignore. But beneath all of this sits something much smaller and much quieter, just as significant and sometimes more important than we know. My relationship with Google search engine was like Tom’s relationship with Jerry – Can’t be without it even if it drove me up the wall, every time. Its infinite wisdom notwithstanding, Google searches invariably resulted in creating Problems to a Solution, not the other way around. Once stuck, I trusted Google to bail me out. Instead, it spun me in circles with cryptic wisdom and contradictions until I figured—better to keep the problem than search for the solution. Here are some pearls of wisdom Google generously offered as answers to my conundrum: #### “Problems are the stepping-stones to success.” An eternally optimistic quote but a convenient excuse to avoid giving me an actual solution. I was not in the mood for stepping-stones or success that day. I wanted a simple answer. Period. #### “There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in its hands. You seek problems because you need their gifts.” This gem almost made me believe that the problem was my choice. I was not giving into Google’s mind games until I got a simple fix. #### “If the problem can be solved, why worry? If the problem cannot be solved, worrying will do you no good.” Wow. A philosophical uppercut. Who said anything about worrying? #### “I am not smart. I stay with problems longer.” That was a cheap shot quoting Einstein. He spent his time breaking down teeny tiny atoms, so his problems probably were smaller. ‘Relatively’ speaking, at least! #### “There is no problem so complicated that it cannot be run away from.” Finally! If you can’t fix it, avoid it. A solution I could get behind. Or so I thought. #### “All too frequently, a problem evaded is a crisis invited.” And just like that, Google ruined it. Evade or not to evade—that was now the question and it pushed me back to square one. #### “Sometimes problems don’t require a solution to solve them; instead, they require maturity to outgrow them.” Great. Just grow older and outgrow your problem. What an elegant answer. Just as I was about to thank Google, it threw a Googly. #### “That’s the real trouble with this world. Too many people grow up.” – Walt Disney Tom & Jerry might one day make peace with each other, but Google and I? Never. Yet, much like those iconic cartoon rivals, I know I couldn’t live without it either. I wanted to try something that is not realistic but attractive, with bright saturated colours. Almost like a photoshopped screen saver. The painting fitted the chapter about how the Sun and Earth showcase each other and not compete with each other. Just as how the earth’s rotation is causing the Sun to rise and set, somewhere on a distant horizon, our hard work is fulfilling a purpose that we don’t see. We need a [purpose](https://bhaskart.com/sense-of-purpose/) that keeps us going without enslaving us to it. This delicate balance between hard work and Purpose makes life magical. One without the other is meaningless. Sun only uses the horizon twice daily to show off and showcase. Any more or any less exposure will mean no life on earth. At the same time, the show stops when the globe stops spinning. Both need each other to survive and thrive. Even if you don’t see your Purpose yet, keep doing your thing. But know that your hard work creates beautiful magic at the right moment somewhere on a distant horizon. Some important purpose comes full circle thanks to your tireless spinning. about missing the boat. All it takes is passion and the humility to learn. So, stop counting your age and pick those brushes up. #### You are never too busy for a hobby If you are passionate enough about something, time somehow creates itself for you. No matter how busy you get, never close those doors on a hobby. #### Until you try, you don't know what you can't do Hard work, practice, constantly challenging yourself to improve are essential to excel in any field. But what is even more important is to start. And when you keep trying every week, you are bound to get better at it. #### Passion eats talent for breakfast Having talent helps. But not everyone is gifted with that. That does not mean we cannot try. It means we have to try harder. As long as you have the passion for improving, you are bound to improve. #### You get the chicken by hatching an egg, not breaking it With the magic of YouTube, you can learn a technique in few days. But getting it right takes a lot longer. So patience is just as important as passion. Kick your easel in frustration or tear your canvas apart in anger for a painting gone wrong. But get back to make new mistakes. That is where the fun is. #### Focus on improvement, not on perfection Don’t aim for perfection. But aim to do one better than your previous work. ‘Perfection’ does not exist, and you will only be kicking yourself for falling short of your imaginary target. The idea of painting is to have fun. #### Trust in muscle memory They say practice makes perfect. It is true. When you keep practicing something over a period of time, your experience corrects all the little mistakes while your [muscles react automatically](https://medium.com/oxford-university/the-amazing-phenomenon-of-muscle-memory-fb1cc4c4726), as if out of habit. #### Get your ducks in a row Not every one is extempore. Get yourself organized, do your homework, learn the techniques and tips required for the specific subject, get the colors needed for the painting etc. Behind every magic there is a lot of organized preparation # ### Painting Tips #### There is no shame in using reference photos Don’t fret about your lack of imagination. Good art is good art. It does not matter where the creativity started. What matters is what ends up [on the canvas.](https://www.bhaskart.com/arty_canvas/) #### Try different styles and watch many tutorials Don’t feel compelled about having your signature style. Not having one can be your uniqueness. The idea is to enjoy and experiment. Ultimately, you will realise that you are more comfortable with [one or two styles.](https://www.bhaskart.com/portfolio-items/cityscape/) And that becomes your signature. Allow it to happen, don’t force it. #### Keep It Simple Stupid - KISS When it comes to painting on canvas, I realised that less is more. Have one focal point. Human eyes are not designed to look at multiple objects with the same level of focus at the same time. Don’t try to show off all your skills in one painting. #### Where there is a wall there is your play Acrylic painting can be done on any surface. So not having a canvas cannot be an excuse. Use a cardboard, a paper, clay pot or even a wall to show off your skills. #### Pick the right size Painting something too big or too small is never easy. Go for those experiments after you have gained sufficient confidence and proficiency. Ideally, any size between 12 and 18 Inch dimensions would be the right size, for me. You chose what works well for you. #### Try painting something you didn't believe you could Always ask yourself the question, when was the last time you did something for the first time. What’s the worst that could happen? Then, back yourself and give it a go. Making a crappy painting now and then is part of the process. The aim should be to reduce its frequency and not run away from it. #### Don’t rush with it You will always find few flaws and areas to improve in your painting, 2 or 3 days after you finished it. So don’t rush to show off. Your eyes only see what your mind wants to see. So let the mind wander elsewhere for few days and allow the eyes to see the finished work. You will realise how unfinished it is. #### Method to madness There are millions of techniques to paint. Watch as many tutorials as you can. Try as many as you want. You will soon realise, techniques can be unique but they work well, as long as you pay respect the rules. Even if the artist used oil paints, I gave this a go with acrylics. In fact, they can convey so many feelings without a word. But, that is not the most challenging part of an elephant painting. The trunk is. At least, to me. Unfortunately, there is no way you can get around this challenge, too, especially when you are painting a close-up of an elephant face. It was the proverbial elephant in the room that had to be addressed, sooner than later. Glad I managed to address it, and the 3D effect on the canvas was well worth the struggle. **Fun Facts about elephant:** Their trunks are perhaps the most sensitive organ found in any mammal – Asian elephants have been seen to pick up a peanut, shell it, blow the shell out and eat the nut. Just when I thought I couldn’t get any grumpier, a worn-out brush came to the rescue. For all those aspiring young painters, never discard an old tool. You never know when they can bail you out of trouble.
